The Town hall is the result of several building/rebuilding campaigns and expansions and explains the conglomerate of styles. The flamboyant Gothic style of the façade in Hoogpoort contrasts sharply with the rather sober Renaissance style of the Botermarkt side.
Inside the building as well one can enjoy several different styles: the Arsenal Hall with its wooden vaulting, the marvellous Wedding Chapel with the counts of Flanders immortalised in stained glass windows, the Pacification Hall with its white and black paved maze used as an alternative to pilgrimages, a marvellous gothic staircase,….
The administrative heart of Ghent has always been beating in the Town hall. During many years in the past it housed four autonomous institutions. And even today the offices of the mayor and alderman can be found in this historical building.
