Visit

The city hall has been the centre of Ghent politics since the fourteenth century. Today, it is still the city’s administrative seat. People make wedding vows here, but you can also visit the building for a guided tour without the need for a wedding.

Practical information

You can visit the city hall reception on any working day from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. If you want to discover more, you can book a guided tour.

In a group

No fewer than 51 rooms lurk behind the unique gable of the city hall, including the Wedding Chapel, where the people of Ghent tie the wedding knot with full conviction. You can look inside, but only with a guide.

With your class

Do you want to introduce your students to the late Gothic and renaissance styles amid Dorian, Ionian, and Corinthian pillars? If so, you must come to the city hall.  Nowhere else in Ghent will you find such a striking combination of styles. Our guides love to talk on and on about how this mix came about.
