Frederik Buyckx
Frederik Buyckx was born in Antwerp in 1984. He obtained a Masters degree in Advertising Design at Sint-Lucas in Antwerp and studied photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent until 2013. Since 2010, he has been a freelance photographer, working for national and international media.
Besides assignments, he mainly focuses on personal projects. For his series Jesus, Make-Up and Football, he documented daily life in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. This work won him several awards, including a World Press Photo Award in 2013. The accompanying photo book was published by Lannoo.
In 2017, Frederik was named Photographer of the Year at the Sony World Photography Awards with photos from his project WOLF.
His latest project Horse Head won the Limaphoto prize for Belgian Documentary Photography in 2019. This project, which explores the existing connection between humans, animals and nature in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, was published by Hannibal Books.
